Offshore Survey of Migratory Birds Using a Stabilized 3D Ornithological Radar

Migration Data from Offshore Areas

Bird migration over the sea is a process taking place across vast areas and often beyond the reach of traditional observation methods. Therefore, Murmurat conducts surveys using a stabilized 3D ornithological radar, enabling measurements to be carried out directly from survey vessels.

This approach makes it possible to obtain detailed and precise data on migration directions, flight altitudes, and the intensity of bird movements in marine areas.

Three-DimensionalMigration Monitoring

Thestabilized 3D ornithological radar enables the determination of migrationdirections, flight altitudes, and migration intensity. The collected data makeit possible to analyse the use of airspace by migratory birds and identifymajor migration corridors. The uniqueness of the solution lies primarily in itsability to perform accurate measurements of bird movements within a 3D spacesurrounding the survey vessel. Flight altitudes are measured for all detected objects.

The technology enables surveys to be conducted both during daytime and nighttime, providing information that is unavailable or difficult to obtain usingobservations carried out solely by field observers.

A Unique Opportunity to Conduct Research from a Survey Vessel

A key element of the service is the ability to conduct surveys directly from survey vessels. The service is delivered using a stabilized 3D ornithological radar integrated with a proprietary stabilization system developed specifically for operation in the marine environment. This allows the acquisition of high-quality data supporting environmental analyses and decision-making processes related to offshore investments.

Automated detection generates actionable intelligence

Real-time bird detection creates vectorised data streams with specialist software visualisation. Our observation teams enhance automated tracking with critical parameters: species identification, population counts, age classification, flight altitudes, measurement methodologies, flight direction, and behavioural characteristics. This integrated approach links descriptive intelligence directly to vector objects within unified database architecture.

Support for Offshore Projects

The servicewas developed for projects carried out in marine areas, particularly offshorewind energy developments.

• environmental impact assessment,
• identification of bird migrationroutes,
• analysis of flight altitudes,
• assessment of airspace use bymigratory birds,
• planning of environmental surveys,
• preparation and implementation ofoffshore investments.

Proprietary Solutions for Marine Bird Migration Surveys

The serviceutilizes proprietary technical solutions developed by Murmurat for conducting surveysusing a stabilized 3D ornithological radar on survey vessels. Selected elementsof the system are subject to intellectual property protection procedures.

By combining modern measurement technologies with extensive experience in marineenvironmental surveys, we provide reliable data supporting the responsibleplanning and development of offshore investments.

System Operational Parameters

The systemhas been designed to conduct migratory bird surveys in sea conditions withsignificant wave heights (HSig) of up to 150 cm (Sea State 4 on the DouglasScale). The recommended platform is a survey vessel longer than 25 m with adraft of at least 2.5 m.

The Murmurat team provides efficient mobilization and demobilization of the systemfor offshore survey campaigns.
